JOHN KAMPAS, of Chelsea,MI,Age 77, went to be with Jesus Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Care Link of Jackson. He was born on February 12, 1929 in Beckley,West Virginia, the son of James and Elizabeth (Baransky) Kampas. Mr. Kampas moved from Ann Arbor to Chelsea in 1989. He worked for the University of Michigan maintenance department, retiring in 1991. On June 23,1950, he married Barbara Jean (Dent)in Lansing, Michigan, and she survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Vickie Hennigan of Ann Arbor and Karen (Roger) Taliaferro of Hillsdale; six grandchildren, John David,Kellie, Jodie, Michael, Brandie, and Caitlyn; and three great-grandchildren, Trista, Haylie, and Joseph. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, John Hennigan. Funeral services will be held Tuesday,March 7th at 2pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Mearl Bradley officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends Monday 2-4 pm and 6- 8pm.

SHIRLEY ANNE SCHAIBLE, of Chelsea, age 76, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2006 at Towsley Village after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born August 18, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana the daughter of the late Everett and Emma (Matthews) Ehlers. Shirley was an active member of the Chelsea community for over 50 years. She was a former member and president of the Chelsea Child Study Club and a board member of McKune Memorial Library for several years. Shirley was also a member of the Chelsea Community Hospital Auxiliary, having given many hours of service. She especially enjoyed narrating fashion shows which benefitted local organizations and participated in many over the years. Shirley was an active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, having taught Sunday School for many years as well as having served on various boards and committees. Shirley was married to Paul G. Schaible in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 20, 1954 and he survives. She is also survived by a son, David M. Schaible (Deborah) of Chelsea, and a daughter, Anne M. (Timothy) Tatum of Coppell, Texas. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Emily Schaible and Mark and Neal Tatum; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Peg (Schaible) Sutton and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Paul in 1965. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 21, 11:00 a.m. at St Paul United Church Of Christ with Rev. Karen Schulte officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Monday 2-5 & 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or The Heritage Foundation of The Chelsea Retirement Community or The Alzheimer's Association to support research.

DORCAS KINSEY, of Ypsilanti, MI, formerly of Chelsea, age 94, died Monday, February 6, 2006 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born on January 5, 1912 in Carey, Ohio, the daughter of William & Gail (Long) Mohn. Dorcas lived in Toledo most her life. She moved to Chelsea in 1956, and opened the Sylvan Coffee Shop in the Sylvan Hotel. She cooked at Mill Lake Camp after she closed the coffee shop. Dorcas and her husband Peter spent many wonderful years at Sugarloaf Lake. On June 2, 1956, she married Peter Kinsey in Indiana, and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1995. She is survived by a daughter, Kae Traugh of Ypsilanti; one grandson, Randy (Debbie) Ellis of Chelsea; a niece, Toni McKay and a nephew, Terry Abrass. She was preceded in death by a sister Florence Abrass in 2004. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.

JENNIE M. PROSSER, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Flint, age 97, died Wednesday, January 26, 2006 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born February 26, 1908 in Bay City, Michigan, the daughter of Marshall & Emma (Karmsen) Ferguson. Jennie was a graduate of Bay City Cental High School and Olivet College. She lived in Flint, Michigan from 1929-1991, where she was a teacher in the Flint schools from 1929 until her retirement in 1968. She was a former member of Hope United Methodist Church of Flint, the Ruth Circle, National Educational Assoc, and the Michigan Educational Assoc, and was a participant in the MSU Student Teacher Program. On June 3, 1933, she married Marion L. Prosser in Bay City, Michigan, and he preceded her in death on March 2, 2001. Survivors include one niece, Dorothy Lefler of Cincinnati, Ohio; a nephew, Thomas C. Perry of Buena Park, CA; two foster brothers, George F. Butterfield of NY and Erston M. Butterfield of TN; and special friends, Betty Johnson & John Mann. She has received tender loving care at the Chelsea Retirement Community for many years. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 30, 2:30 pm in the Towsley Village Chapel of the Chelsea Retirement Community. Rev. Beth Foster will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint. Memorial contributions may be made to Chelsea Retirement Community or Hope United Methodist Church in Flint. VIRGINIA SHAFFER, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Kalamazoo, age 90, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born on January 28, 1915 in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of Hugh & Myrtle (Elliot) Longnecker. She was the secretary of ROTC at Western Michigan University from 1961 until her retirement in 1980. On August 11, 1940, she married Leon Shaffer in Newton, Iowa and he preceded her in death on March 25, 2003. Survivors include a son, David (Margaret) Shaffer of Glenveiw, IL; 2 daughters, Sharon (Richard) Montgomery of Ypsilanti, Margaret (Greg) Siadal of Goleta, CA; 6 grandchildren, Eric, Kathrine, Steven, Jeffery, Melody, Mark; 1 great-grandson, Spencer. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Bryan Shaffer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2:00 pm at Chelsea Retirement Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Beth Foster officiating. A private burial was held at Mount Ever-Rest Cemetery, Kalamazoo. Memorial contributions may be made to Benevolent Care Fund at Chelsea Retirement Community. ROSALIE MOXIE, of Livonia, MI, age 79, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Chelsea Community Hospital. She was born on July 1, 1926 in Grafton, West Virginia, the daughter of James A. & Pearl H. (Stafford) Thorn. Rosalie was a life member and Past President of the Northville VFW Post #4012 Auxiliary. She had been a beautician since 1956, and was the former owner of Paquin House Beauty Shop. Survivors include two nieces Carol D. (William) Ostrander of Stockbridge, Linda (Leon) Stricklin; three nephews, Wesley (Mary) Pietila, James (Paula) Pietila, Robert Thorn. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Thorn, James Thorn, and two sisters, Betty Pietila and Joeclair Thorn. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28, 10:30 am, Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Jeff Bradley officiating. Burial will follow at Parkview Memorial, Livonia. The family will receive friends Friday 2-4 & 6-8 pm.

CARL HERMAN KLINK, of Chelsea, age 88, died Saturday, January 21, 2006 in his home. He was born January 14, 1918 in Lyndon Township, Chelsea, Michigan, the son of John George & Mathilda (Keck) Klink. Carl lived in Chelsea all his life. He served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. Carl was a lifetime member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. He retired from Chrysler Proving Grounds in 1981. Carl loved going to Big Boy, and he loved working in the garden. On September 20, 1958, he married Elenor Esther Eisele, at St. Paul Church in Chelsea, and she preceded him in death on July 5, 2005. Other survivors include a son, Roland J. (Vera L.) Klink of Chelsea; a granddaughter, Katie Klink of Chelsea; one brother, Albert Klink; one sister, Pauline (Klink) Hawkins; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, William, and John, and one sister, Louise (Klink) Altenberndt. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 25, 11:00 am at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Chelsea, with Rev. Karen Schulte officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. RON KIEL, of Ann Arbor, MI, formerly of Chelsea, age 73, died Thursday, January 19, 2006 at Arbor Hospice. He was born March 21, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Elmer E. & Irene M. (Schumacher) Kiel. Ron retired from Chelsea Proving Grounds after 35 years of service. He served two years for the US Army in Germany as an MP during the Korean War. Survivors include five children, Ron (Pam) Kiel of Chelsea, Jeff (Shanda) Kiel of Indian River, Sheryl Kiel (Mike Dayton) of Mattawan, Karen (Doug) Burchett of Chelsea, David (Carol) Kiel of Benton Harbor; 7 grandchildren; two sisters, Elaine Hagan of Utica, Ethel Swartz of Warren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn Kiel. On April 16, 1993, he married Nancy (VanRiper) Sweeny, and she survives. Also surviving are his step-children, Ronald (Bethany ) Sweeny of Dexter, Rick Sweeny of Pinckney, Randy (Sabrina) Sweeny and Rod (Rachel) Sweeny, both of FL, Ryan Sweeny of Ann Arbor; 8 step-grandchildren; and 9 step-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by 4 sisters and 3 brothers, including Elmer Kiel, and 1 step-grandson. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 23, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Lyons and Don Pierson Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday 5-8pm, Sunday 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice or the scholarship fund for the Kiel grandchildren.

EVA STIMAC, of Chelsea, MI formerly of Ann Arbor, age 96, died Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born March 4, 1909 in South Range, Michigan, the daughter of Phillip J. & Pauline (Jacovac) Stimac. Eva was a secretary for the VA Office in Ann Arbor (retired in 1975). She attended business school and was Catholic. Survivors include her sister, Katherine Stimac of Chelsea. She was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 3 brothers. A private memorial service will be held at a later date, when her ashes will be interred at the St. Mary Cemetery in Paw Paw, Michigan. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. MARY W. DeLANCEY, of Ann Arbor, MI, age 83, died Sunday, January 15, 2006 in Chelsea, MI. Born November 20, 1922 in Peru, IL, she was the daughter of Carl F. and Helen M. (Stoldorf) Wacker. She grew up in LaSalle, IL and graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in Nursing and Social Work. On August 24, 1946, she married Oliver "Sam" DeLancey Jr. in LaSalle, IL. Soon after, they moved to Ann Arbor where they lived throughout their lives. Mary will be remembered for her loving warmth and friendship, her engaging interest in other people's lives, a love of classical music and biography, as well as the unfailing support she provided to her close-knit family and wide circle of devoted friends. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Margaret Waterman Group, and the League of Women Voters as well as being a volunteer in many community organizations. More recently, she was a member of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society, and volunteered at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. She worked at Student Health Services at the University of Michigan and at Planned Parenthood. Mary was preceded in death by her husband who died on November 26, 2005. Survivors include two daughters, Jane A. DeLancey of Ann Arbor; Dr. Julia A. DeLancey of Kirksville, MO; a son, Dr. John O.L. (Barbara) DeLancey of Ann Arbor; 3 grandchildren, J.O., Claire, and Lang DeLancey; two brothers, Dr. John (Joanne) Wacker and Dr. Carl (Sandra) Wacker, both of Mendota, IL; one sister, Helen Chamberlain of Waterford, PA; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. DeLancey's ashes have been interred by her children at the First Congregational Church Memorial Garden in Ann Arbor. A memorial service for both Mary W. and Oliver "Sam" DeLancey will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28 at First Congregational Church, 608 E. William St, Ann Arbor, MI. ANNA M. HEISS, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Carleton, MI, age 99, died Saturday, January 7, 2006 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born October 5, 1906 in Fairgrove, MI, the daughter of John & Sadie (Cool) Montei. Mrs. Heiss taught at several county schools and then at Airport Elementary before her retirement in 1968. She also served as a Sunday school teacher, pianist, and organist for thirty-five years, as well as singing in church choir and participating in the Ladies' Society. She married Raymond P. Heiss in Fairgrove, Michigan, on August 18, 1928, and he preceded her in death on September 8, 1985. She is survived by her daughters, Mildred (Glen) Breitner of Carleton, Hazel (Adolph) Jedryczka of Carleton, and Irma Schar of Zimbabwe, Africa; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister Pauline MacArthur of Hobe Sound, Florida. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Reverend J.D. Montei, Howard Montei; and two sisters, Gladys Bailey & Hazel Montei. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 10, 11:00 am at the Carleton United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Brenner officiating. Burial will be at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock, Michigan. ALBERT L. WEBER, of Grass Lake, MI, age 82, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at Cedar Knoll Care Center. He was born April 11, 1923 in Chelsea, Michigan, the son of George & Adelma May (Fisk) Weber. Mr. Weber has lived in the Chelsea/Grass Lake area most of his life. He married Helen L. Grattan in Maybrook, NY on September 16, 1944, and she preceded him in death on May 13, 1994. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy (James) Heydlauff, Linda Sue Weber and Cathy May Weber, all of Grass Lake; one son, Michael L.(Judi) Weber of Manchester; three grandsons, Jim, Ron Heydlauff and Tyler Weber; two brothers, Duane, and Ernest; three great-granddaughters, Brianna, Megan, and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Davis, and three brothers, Norbert, Don and William. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 6, 11am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. CHARLES S. RITTER JR., of Chelsea, MI, age 85, died peacefully Sunday, January 1, 2006 in his home. He was born on March 3, 1920 in Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of Charles S. & May (Squires) Ritter Sr. Charlie retired from the US Army, where he served during WWII. He worked for Cogsdil-Twist Drill in Detroit, owned "Louie's Restaurant" in Chelsea, and worked many years in sales. Charlie was an inventor and investor. He was active in the Village Council, and served as Village President. Charlie served on numerous Village committees, and was a founding member of the Chelsea VFW. He was very supportive of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Catherine Birch, who he married on November 17, 1945. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter and an infant son, and a brother, James Ritter. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret "Megs" (Tom) Beller of Novi, Cecilia "CeCe" (Kevin) Corazza of Livonia; two sisters-in-law, Bernidene Visel and Harriet Birch; 6 grandchildren, Julie, Jennifer, Thomas, Mary, Maggie, Charlie; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. ARMIN HENRY KUHL Grass Lake, MI, formerly of Chelsea,Age 82, died Monday, December 26, 2005 at Cedar Knoll Care Center. He was born December 1, 1923 in Sharon Township, the son of Louis Henry & Ella (Eschelbach) Kuhl. He was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester. He was a lifetime farmer in Chelsea. Armin was a member of the Roger's Corners Farm Bureau. On June 7, 1947, he married Edna Mitchell in Ann Arbor, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 1997. Survivors include one son, Gerald H. (Jean) Kuhl of Chelsea; two daughters, Doreen M. (Howard) McCalla of Chelsea, Gail L. (Rolla) Green of GA; sister, Lucille Bell; 5 grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 29, 2 pm at Emanuel United Church of Christ, Manchester, with Rev. Gary Kwiatek officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Manchester. JOYCE GLADYS ANGELOCCI, Chelsea, MI, Age 75, died Monday, December 26, 2005 in her home She was born on August 6, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Howard & Gladys (Christensen) Hartung. Joyce moved to Chelsea in 2004, after living in Dexter from 1984-2004. Before that time they lived in Ypsilanti. Joyce graduated from EMU with a Masters in Occupational Therapy and Special Education. While attending EMU, she was a member of the Tri-Sigma sorority. She worked for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District as a teacher and teacher consultant, retiring in 1988, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (professional teacher's organization). She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Dexter, where she sang in the choir, worked on various committees, and served on the altar guild. On Feb. 9, 1951, she married Angelo A. Angelocci at St. Luke Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti. Survivors include three sons, Keith (Catherine) of Novi, Mark of Dexter, Bradley (Roxanne) of Chelsea; one daughter, Lisa (Carmen) Argenziano; 11 grandchildren, Nicholas, Timothy, Jillian Angelocci; Nicole, Mark Angelocci; Marie, Blake, Kristin Angelocci; Mia Spackman, Joseph & Anthony Argenziano. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald Hartung; her mother, Gladys Hartung Naleid, her father, Howard Hartung, and her step-father, Roy Naleid. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 31, 10:30 am at St. James Episcopal Church in Dexter with Rev. Paul Hiyama officiating. Burial will be in at St. James Memorial Garden. HELEN MARIE (McMICHAEL HOAG, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Swartz Creek, MI, age 98, died Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born on September 17, 1907 in Vernon Township, Michigan, the daughter of Frank & Bessie (Patchel) McMichael. She was formerly of Swartz Creek, MI and Sarasota, FL She was a member of the Chelsea First United Methodist Church. She served as President and was a member of the Swartz Creek United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Swartz Creek Women's Club. She married Kenneth A. Hoag in Durand, MI on May 30, 1928, and he preceded her in death on July 5, 2002. Survivors include one son, Richard A. Hoag of Goodrich, MI; one daughter-in-law, Luene A. Smith of Ypsilanti, MI; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces; and 2 nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, Dr. David Hoag, a sister, Bernice Harrington; a brother, John McMichael, and a daughter-in-law, Terrie (Thal) Hoag. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 21, 10:30 am at Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel, with Rev. Beth Foster officiating. Burial will be at Oak Plains Cemetery, Shaftsburg, Michigan. SUE ANN EISENBEISER, of Chelsea, MI, age 62, died Friday, December 16, 2005 at Arbor Hospice. She was born May 10, 1943 in Jackson, Michigan, the daughter of Warren R. & Caroline (Konkle) Eisenbeiser. Sue was an active member of Chelsea Free Methodist Church and Bible studies for 25 years. She was the Christian Education Director, Pastor's Cabinet, and Prayer Chairperson at the Free Methodist Church for many years. Sue graduated Chelsea High School in 1961, and went on to earn a BS and Masters (in Remedial Reading Education) from EMU. She was a member of PEO and worked in Girl Scouts as a volunteer for 15 years. Sue taught in the Lake Fenton Schools for 30 years. Survivors include her mother, Caroline Eisenbeiser of Chelsea; 2 brothers, William (Sharleen) Eisenbeiser, and John (Bonnie) Eisenbeiser, both of Chelsea; 5 nieces and nephews, Amy (Joel) Craig, Kurt (Vickie), James, Samuel (Karen) Eisenbeiser, and Lucy (Paul) Beauchamp; and 8 great-nieces and nephews; and her aunt, Darlene Eisenbeiser. She was preceded in death by her father, Warren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 20, 11 am at Chelsea Free Methodist Church, with Rev. Larry Lyons officiating. MARGARET "PEGGY" SCOTT, of Chelsea, MI, age 79, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2005 in Chelsea. Peggy was born on June 26, 1926 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Hans and Marcella Erne. On September 26, 1947, she married S. Robert "Scotty" Scott, who preceded her in death on January 17, 1994. Surviving are her three devoted children, Cheri (Mark) Klein, Nancy (Scott) Weinmann, and Lee (Felicia) Scott. Peggy found much joy and comfort from her five loving grandchildren: Jason, Sean, Michael, Kristy, and Matt. Other survivors include her sister-in-law Mary Lou Erne, numerous nieces and nephews, and good friends Karen and Jeff Mundus and Patti and Gary Hagopian. While living in Grosse Pointe, Peggy served as a docent at the DIA, where she shared her love of art with museum visitors. Later in life, Peggy volunteered for Meals on Wheels in the Ann Arbor area. For many years Peggy lived at her cottage on Portage Lake where she enjoyed many family gatherings, boat trips on the lake, and beautiful sunrises. For the last three years, she resided at Chelsea Retirement Community where she was active in exercise classes and book clubs. Peggy was a longtime cancer survivor, and even though the disease deprived her of some of life's pleasures, she lived life with tremendous grace and dignity. She loved reading, art, nature, music, and walks throughout Hudson Mills Metropark. Peggy will be greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched. LLOYD JAMES CHAMPION, of Chelsea, MI, age 58, died Monday, November 28, 2005 in his home. He was born August 23, 1947 in Belleville, Michigan, the son of Thomas E. and Alta (Miller) Champion. Lloyd attended the Chelsea Church of the Nazarene, where he helped with the new church building. He studied electrical engineering at University of Michigan, and enjoyed working with computers. Survivors include a sister, Lois Mary Champion of Denver, CO; two brothers, David Lee (Kelly) of Los Angeles, CA, Daniel Paul (Barbara) of Ann Arbor; his aunt and uncle, Sue and Ron Brewer; his uncle, Albert Miller; 8 nieces and nephews, Jeffrey, Erik, and Rebecca; Laurie, Karrie, Jody; Gina, Mia. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 6, 11:00 am at Chelsea Church of the Nazarene, 12126 Jackson Road in Chelsea, with Rev. Jeff Crowder officiating. DEBORAH BACKON, Of Chelsea, MI, age 98, died on November 18th at home in her apartment at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born on December 11, 1906 in Chappaqua, New York, the daughter of Selden and Josephine (Daskam) Bacon. Survivors include her niece, Anne Robinson of Alaska, and nephews Michael Bacon and Selden (Samuel) Bacon, Jr. of New Jersey. Also surviving is her life-long friend, Elsie Radford Fuller of Chelsea and Elsie’s family (who became Deborah’s family, too): Nancy and Harold Harpfer of Harrisville; Lynn, Dave, Phoebe, Max, Abram & Willa Booth of Chelsea,; Janis, Larry, Matt & Sam Montei of Kalamazoo; Karen & Ed Solomon and Marisa, Andy & Vince Cozzolino of Florida. Deborah was preceded in death by her brother Selden, Jr. and sister, Anne. Deborah attended Smith College and received her R.N. from Bellevue Hospital in New York City in 1934. In 1941 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in public health nursing from New York University. From 1929 – 1942, she held a variety of jobs across the country from being a nurse for the New Jersey State Prison for Women to serving as a missionary nurse for tubercular Indian children in Fort Yukon, Alaska. She worked as a floor nurse in the psychiatric ward at Bellevue Hospital in New York, earned advanced obstetrical certification at Chicago Lying-In Hospital and did home deliveries in the poorest neighborhoods. She was the superintendent of USPH Service Obstetrical Hospital in Appalachian Kentucky. In 1942 she volunteered for the U.S. Army and became a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, serving as a MASH nurse in frontline evacuation hospitals across Europe, earning 5 battle stars. When the war ended, she spent 12 weeks studying at the Sorbonne and then enrolled at Columbia University on the GI Bill, where she earned both a masters degree (1948) and a doctorate (1950) in English literature. She also did research in Oxford, England as an ACLS fellow. In 1950 she was appointed Dean of Women at the University of Michigan and served until 1961, when she resigned to become an Assistant Professor of English at University of Michigan. She took two sabbaticals to teach at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C. (Member of the United Negro College Fund). Upon retirement from Univ. of Mich. in 1968, she traveled to over 48 countries, wrote several books, and divided her time between lakeside summers in her beloved Harrisville, Mi and Ann Arbor, MI. In 1998 she moved to Chelsea Retirement Community, where she became an occasional speaker on literature and life. Memorial contributions may be made to the UMRC Heritage Foundation, earmarked for the Chelsea Retirement Community Benevolent Care Fund, which provides for residents who outlive their savings. RAYMOND HARRY MILLER, of Ann Arbor, MI, age 80, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born March 3, 1925 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Charles F. & Edna (Riechow) Miller. Mr. Miller has lived in Scio Estates for many years. He graduated from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. He served as a marine in WWII (4th Marine Division), serving in Saipan, Tinian, Marianas Island, and Iwo Jima in heavy artillery. Raymond was a US Postal employee in Ann Arbor and in Anchorage, Alaska, where he retired in 1987. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. On September 28, 1943, he married Mary Edith McCartney in Santa Ana, CA, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Frederick (Carol) of Columbia, KY, Glenn (Jackie) of Jackson, MI; one daughter, Charlene Jones of Anchorage, AK; 6 grandchildren, Lisa Calvert, Shannon Miller, Cindy Nelson, Debbie Cook, Jaclyn Jones, Larry Jones, Jr.; 6 great-grandchildren, and his close friends, Dwight Mitchell, Ted Parker, & Ron Kiel. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Ainsworth Miller. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 10, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Pastor David Bracklein officiating. IRVIN OLIVER CARLSON, of Chelsea, MI formerly of Redford Township, age 95, died Sunday, October 30, 2005 at Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born May 21, 1910 in Chesterton, Indiana, the son of Hjalmar F. & Anna A. (Swenson) Carlson. During the depression, Mr. Carlson attended Iowa State University, Indiana, Purdue, and finally earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Valparaiso in 1939. He worked for the Bristol Company (now American Chain & Cable) as a mechanical engineer. During WWII he worked on government projects. Even after his retirement, they continued to call him in for special projects. He has been a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Redford Township since the 1950s. He was also a member of the Swedish Club in Farmington Hills. Irv developed a pressure boot for his diabetic father before insulin was discovered, which restored circulation to his father's leg and saved it from amputation. He loved woodworking and was an inventor. He was married to Isabel Gregan from 1940 until her death in 1973. He then married Esther K. Keller in 1973, and she preceded him in death in 2003. It was after Esther's death that he left Redford Township, and moved to Chelsea Retirement Community. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Dr. Charles) Fusilier of Manchester, Martha (James) Placido of Perry; one son, Gerald (Adele) Carlson of Barrington, RI; one sister, Grace Angell of St. Paul, MN; 6 grandchildren, Michael Fusilier, Laurie Galison, Amy Pontes, Leah Carlson, Dr. Kristy Sharpe, Bradly Placido; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by seven siblings, Hjalmar Carlson, Lilly Raun, Linnea Ross, Evelyn Carlson, Eleanor Maxwell, Wesley Carlson, and Howard Carlson. ELLEN A. BALLIET, of Jackson, formerly of Saline and Ann Arbor, age 80, died Friday, October 21, 2005 at her daughter's home in Jackson. She was born January 8, 1925 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the daughter of Harry & Ellen (Laidlaw) Hubbard. Mrs. Balliet spent most of her life in the Ann Arbor area. She worked at Ford Motor Company in Ypsilanti for many years, and later retired from the University of Michigan in housekeeping. She was a member of Salem Grove United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star (Hale Chapter). She was an avid doll collector. On Dec. 11, 1947, she married Kenneth R. Balliet in Ypsilanti, MI, and he preceded her in death on May 6, 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Karen K. (Arnold) Mitchske of Giddings, TX, Emily A. Niethammer of Jackson; 3 brothers, Walter (Ida) Hubbard, Mack Hubbard and Kenneth (Barbara) Hubbard, all of Ypsilanti; 6 sisters, Vernajean (Gerald) Millage, Barbara (Roger) Young, Claudia Belcher, Faunchon Hanson, Rosemarie Adiska, all of Ypsilanti, and Sharon (Ed) Vanderpool of Tennesee; 9 grandchildren, Mark Parker, Kenneth Parker, Elizabeth (James) Lowry, Dawn & Shawn Parker, Richard Niethammer, Victoria (Rob) McDowell, Sarah Goll, Russell Goll; many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. MARGARET LOUISE HEGEDUS, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Taylor. Age 85, died Friday, October 14, 2005 at Silver Maples of Chelsea. She was born on March 4, 1920 in Monet, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Nellie (Dummitt) Prevo. Louise moved to Chelsea from Taylor, MI in 2002. She enjoyed bowling and synchronized swimming, and was a former "Pink Lady" at Heritage Hospital. She married Fredrick Hegedus, who preceded her in death on September 1, 2002. Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Cargill of Clarkston, MI, Shirley Lee of Holland, MI, Spring (Thomas L. Jr.) Auth of Scio Township; one sister, Patsie (Fred) Gadomski of Taylor; 3 grandchildren, Tracy (Chris) Vaughn, Lisa(Tim) Koppenol and Brandon Lee; and two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jennah Jodoin. MARGARET LOVEDAY KRUSE, of Manchester, MI, age 94, died in her sleep on Friday, September 30, 2005 at Heartland Health Care Center in Jackson. She was born May 1, 1911 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of John Edgar & Maggie Ellen (Picton) Hendy. Margaret graduated from East Lansing Central High School, and went on to become a nurse. She married Lawrence C. Kruse on Dec. 17, 1935, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1982. They traveled the States together and enjoyed being with their family members. She also traveled abroad to Portugal and Spain. Margaret enjoyed many crafts and loved to cook and bake. She enjoyed the company of her sheltie "Mr. Lucky". Margaret is survived by 4 sons and 4 daughters, Joel H. (Jane) of Geneva, FL, Wendell R. of Chelsea, Margaret L. "Peggy"' of Manchester, Richard E. (Sharron) of Parma, Carol M. Martin of Grass Lake, Mary J. of Kenosha WI, Phyllis A. (Dale) Sexton of Shawnee, Kansas, and James A. (Sue) of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Kruse; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, George (B.J.) Hendy and Kenneth (Betty) both of Lansing; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, David W; brothers, Thomas and Edward; and a sister, Elsie Stimpson. HERMAN L. KOENN, of Chelsea, MI, age 88, died Thursday, September 29, 2005 in his home with his family by his side. He was born July 15, 1917 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the son of Herman J. and Helena (McGuire) Koenn. Herm was a U of M business school graduate. During WWII he was a foreman at the Willow Run Bomber Plant. He moved to Chelsea in 1951. Herm was always a leader, he was on many local boards. He was a member of the Pittsfield Union Grange for over 60 years, serving in many capacities at the local, state, and national level. Herm was a member of Michigan Milk Producers Association, serving as an officer in local and state committees, he was also President of the American Dairy Board, and served as National Secretary for 3 years. He was a charter member of the United Dairy Industry Association, serving on the National Board for 49 years. He was a member and Past President of the Chelsea Kiwanis Club, Chelsea Fair Board President, member of Chelsea School Board, County Parks and Rec., Washtenaw County and State Farm Bureau, and was a member of the MSU Extension advisory board at both the county and state level. He served several years on the Washtenaw County Road Commission, where he was Chairman. Herm was a licensed Real Estate Broker for Charles Reinhart in Chelsea, working until just weeks ago. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea and a strong supporter of the St. Louis Center. Herm always had a good word about everyone. He was respected for his integrity and fairness. On June 20, 1942, he married Mildred Louise Rykert in Ypsilanti, and she preceded him in death on July 31, 2003. Survivors include one son, Charles H. (Judy) Koenn of Chelsea; 4 grandchildren, Charles T. (Ann Marie), Matt (Kim) Koenn, Debra Koenn O'Neil, Steven Koenn; 2 step-grandchildren, David & Julie Tobias; 5 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Tracy, Jack, Kevin and Natalie Koenn. He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Curtis and one brother, Theodore during infancy. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, October 3, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Dr. William J. Turner & Fr. Joseph Rinaldo officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. SELAH MAXEL PETSCH, age 71. On September 27, 2005 in the arms of her loving husband, Selah Maxel Petsch went to sleep in her earthly home and awoke in the arms of her loving Saviour. Maxel (as she was called by her family and friends) was born December 22, 1933 to Max L. & Frances L. (Wilmot) Duckworth. Maxel married her husband, Ellsworth on June 15, 1963. They have resided in Chelsea since their marriage. Maxel has been a faithful member of Mt. Hope Bible Church in Grass Lake. Maxel is survived by her husband, Ellsworth; her daughter, Maro Petsch of Jackson; her son-in-law & daughter, Walter & Jean Santos of Antioch, California; three grandchildren, Emily (5), David (2) and Joshua (9 mo) all of California. She is also survived by her brother & his wife, Donn & Rolena Duckworth of Jackson, sister-in-law Mary Deana Duckworth of Mt. Pleasant, and four nieces. She is preceded in death by her father, Max in 1971, her mother, Francis Lucille in 1998 and her brother, Gene in 1990. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct 1, 1:00 pm at Mt. LORETTA JENKINS, age 84, died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. She was born December 26, 1920 in River Rouge, Michigan, the daughter of Edgar Louis & Etta Louise (Bechlar) Tatro. Loretta was a long time resident of Ypsilanti. Loretta served in the US Army during WWII. She attended the University of Kentucky and University of Michigan. Loretta worked for Ypsilanti State Hospital. She retired from Livingston County Dept. of Mental Health where she was a social worker. She was a former member of the Ann Arbor Potter's Guild. Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Lange of New Bedford, MA, Grace Kerr of Pinckney; a brother, Robert Tatro of Youngston, AZ; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. JOSEPH BELSKI, age 91, died Sunday, September 25, 2005 at Chelsea Retirement Community . He was born on December 26, 1913 in Mount Union, Pennsylvania, the son of Dyhah & Llisawela (Grynerwich) Belski. He married Jean Buck on May 1, 1943 in North Branch, MI, and she preceded him in death on June 2, 2000. Survivors include one son, William (June) Belski of Bloomfield; two daughters, Catherine Belski of Ypsilanti and Mary Jo Colvin of Colorado; 3 grandchildren, Jeremy Joseph Colvin, Kelly Jo Colvin and Alice Jean (Jon Baker) ColvinBaker; 3 great-grandchildren, Cody Lane, Haily Jean & Colby Dean Baker. He was preceded in death his parents, brothers, Pete & William and his sister, Ann. In his early twenties, Joseph won a Golden Glove Boxing Championship. He was proud to have worked as a tool engineer for General Motors in Flint for 40 years. Joseph was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Flint, and was a member of the Knight of Columbus. He loved to visit his family and friends. Joseph moved to Chelsea in 2001. ROBERT RAY ADAMS, age 82, died Friday, September 16, 2005 at Chelsea Community Hospital . He was born on February 28, 1923 in Montgomery, Michigan, the son of Howard F. & Gertrude (Thayer) Adams. Robert graduated from Napoleon High School. He retired from Diecast Corporation after 23 years. Robert was a baker for 25 years before that, at the Hotel Hayes, the Federal Bake Shop, and Conrad's Bakery. He was a charter member of Our Lady Fatima. He was a WWII Army Veteran, and was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Jackson. Robert enjoyed square dancing at Single Squares in Jackson. He was an avid sportsman, hunter and fisherman. He loved his two dogs, Chi Chi and Cha Cha. On August 9, 1946, he married Rita Riddle in Jackson, and she survives. Other survivors include 3 sons, Alan (Loyce) of Jackson, Kirk of Jackson, Brian "Buford" (Kelly) of Napoleon; a special niece, Deb (Edward) Demeter of West Bloomfield; 2 brothers, Owen Adams of Memphis, MI, Ernie (Donna) Adams of Cedar Springs, MI; 2 sisters, Barbara Johnson of Jackson, Flora (Howard) Meeks of Tecumseh; a sister-in-law, Shirley Adams of Napoleon; a granddaughter, Stephanie Adams; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a great-niece, Jenelle Roberts, a sister, Dorothy Gardner, a brother, Howard Adams. KARL. A. LUCKHARDT, of Chelsea, age 80, died Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital . He was born on January 7, 1925 in Lodi Township, Michigan, the son of Otto & Ida (Herter) Luckhardt. Karl retired from the Chrysler Proving Ground in 1980, after 28 years of service. He also worked as an independent mechanic for many years. He enjoyed plowing snow on the sidewalks for his neighbors for over 35 years. On June 17, 1950, he married Constance Freysinger in Chelsea, and she preceded him in death on November 13, 2004. Survivors include brothers-in-law, Walter (Dolores) Freysinger of Chelsea and Robert "Bud" (Joyce) Freysinger of Grass Lake; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Erma Marshall and Ruth Dobson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea with Rev. Robert Freysinger officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery, Ann Arbor. The family will receive friends Friday 2-5 & 7-9 pm. ROBIN SUE (NIGA) NEWBY, of Westland, MI, age 29, died suddenly of natural causes on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at her home. She was born on June 13, 1976 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the daughter of Dan & Bonny (Hack) Niga. She married David Newby and he survives. Other survivors include her parents of FL; one brother, Dan Niga Jr. of FL; one sister, Aimee Finch of Grass Lake; one nephew, Mason Finch; one niece, Ciara Finch; one grandmother, Kathryn Niga; father and mother-in-law, David B. & Margaret Newby of Canton. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea with Rev. Mark Porinsky officiating. MARY ROSE STANICH, age 98, died peacefully on August 28, 2005 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born Feb. 20, 1907 to Thomas and Barbara (Marof) Stefanac in Hancock, Mich. Mary was married in 1933 to Matthew Stanich and he preceded her in death in 1957. Mary was also predeceased by her daughter; Joan Morley, her sisters; Barbara Guracech, Ann Zuzich, and Dona Kasun, and her brother; Thomas Stefanac. She is mourned by her son, Charles (Lynne) Stanich of Ann Arbor, and grandchildren, Mark and Matthew Stanich, Mindy Toner, and Scott Morley. She is also survived by 2 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Zora Stefanac, and nephews; Tom and Mike (Germain) Stefanac, and Jim (Marion) Guracech. After growing up in Michigan's UP, Mary moved to Detroit where she was a civilian employee of the US Coast Guard. After retirement, Mary moved to Rochester Hills where she enjoyed golf, baking, playing cards, and travel - especially back to her dear "Copper Country" and to Europe. She was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union. On Wednesday, August 31st, the family will receive friends at St Patrick's Catholic Church, 5671 Whitmore Lake Road, Ann Arbor at 10 am. A funeral mass will follow at 11 am, with Father Terry Dumas officiating. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. IDA FORSTER NEAL, of Chelsea, age 96, died Thursday, August 25, 2005 in her home. She was born on April 1, 1909 in Cedar Gap, Missouri, the daughter of Franklin T. & Agnes (Gaston) Forster. She was a graduate of Drury College (now University) in Springfield, MO. Before coming to Chelsea, Mrs. Neal lived in Beloit, KS, Springfield, MO, Ferndale, MI, and Farmington, MI. Teaching was Ida's life and love, and gardening was a great passion. She was a member of the North Congregational Christian Church in Farmington Hills, Michigan. On Feb. 2, 1932, she married Herbert Roland Neal Sr., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1981. Survivors include two sons, James (Harriet) Neal of Prescott, AZ, David (Karen) Neal of Chelsea; two daughters, Susan (Clyde) Goodwin of Rocky Hill, NJ and Marcella (Robert) Kusch of Piscataway, NJ; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Herbert R. Neal Jr; two brothers, Richard & Kenneth Forster; two sisters Catherine Bolenski and Dorothy Wood. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 30, 10:00 am at North Congregational Christian Church in Farmington Hills, with Rev. Mark Jensen officiating. A private burial will be held at Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park, Livonia. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Monday, 3-5 and 7-9. PHYLLIS E. PASSOW, of Chelsea, MI, age 78, died Thursday, August 25, 2005 in her home. She was born April 3, 1927 in Chelsea, the daughter of George G. & Mildred L. (Hieber) Hopper. Mrs. Passow was a member of North Sharon Baptist Church. She was an R.N. who worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. On November 24, 1948, she married Donald J. Passow in Chelsea, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 18,2003. Survivors include three daughters, Shannon Darnold of Jackson, Felicia (Mark) Borton of Ann Arbor, Camille (Todd) Bauer of Oakdale, CT, three sons, Norman "Darryl" (Terrie) of Jackson, Jon Kevin of Tampa, FL, Glenn of Ypsilanti; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia Straub of Grass Lake. She was also preceded in death by two children, Crystal Passow & Donald G. Passow. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 29, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Pastor Bob Toler officiating. Burial will follow at North Sharon Cemetery, Sharon Township, Michigan. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday 7-9 pm and Sunday 1-5 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to North Sharon Baptist Church.

ETHEL O. PEDERSEN, of Chelsea, MI, age 93, died Monday, August 8, 2005 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born February 10, 1912 in Fergus Falls, MN, the daughter of Edward P. & Olava (Saxhaug) Bye. She married John Martin Pedersen Jr. in Fergus Falls, MN on Aug. 19, 1936, and he preceded her in death on July 4, 1965. Survivors include two daughters, Judith (Kurt) Brandle of Ann Arbor, MI and Jane Smith of Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral services are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Rd, Park Ridge, IL 60068 (phone 847-823-5122). Burial will be at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, IL. DORIS HAYNES, of Chelsea, MI, age 96, died Saturday, August 6, 2005 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born on July 9, 1909 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of John Charles & Alice Mae (Haughton) Haynes. Doris moved to Chelsea on September 9, 1991, coming from Birmingham, MI. Miss Haynes was a librarian at Pontiac Central High School, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham, MARSP, XI chapter, Delta Cappa Gamma, and DAR. She was a member of the University of Michigan Alumni, where she earned her graduate degree in 1969. She also attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA and Michigan State University. Survivors include two nieces, Leslie & Nicole Haynes, and one grandnephew, Patrick Henry. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Haynes and Ethlyne Henry; and one brother, Doug Henry. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 12, 10:30 am the Chelsea Retirement Community (in the Main Chapel). Burial will be at the Corona Cemetery, Corona, Michigan. WAYNE ALLEN OLIVER, of Chelsea, MI, age 52, died Friday, July 29, 2005 at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born May 8, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of William & Theresa (Langley) Oliver. Wayne has lived in Chelsea most of his life and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1971. Survivors include his mother of Ann Arbor; 2 sisters, Cheri (Paul) Elert of Ann Arbor, Linda Loy of Chelsea; nieces & nephews, Kim Porco, Mike Stewart, Rachel Elert, David Elert, Andrew Loy and Brandon Loy; great nieces & nephews, Anthony Porco, Samantha Elert-Fabing, Kelsey Lena Elert-Fabing, and Tristen Elert. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilhelm Dezinsky. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 1, 1:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Waterloo. The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home from 1-3 & 5-7 pm.
